What is the difference between Semaglutide and Tirzepatide? Which is better for weight loss?

Semagltude and Tirzepatide are medications that require a prescription. Semaglutide and Tirzepatide are approved by the FDA for weight management and are glucagon-like protein receptor agonists (GLP-1 RA). However, Tirzepatide is a dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor co-agonist.

While both medications are effective in helping patients lose weight, patients on Tirzepatide tend to lose more weight in the given time frame. In two recent studies (SURMOUNT-1 & STEP1) patients lost 17.8% on Tirzepatide versus 12.4% on Semaglutide more than placebo.  So, the bottom line is that both medications are effective in helping patients lose weight when combined with diet and exercise. Patients on Tirzepatide tend to lose more weight than patients on Semaglutide.

It is important to remember that weight loss is individualized and never guaranteed.
